Course Reflection

For the first rotation, Material modelings, my skills and techniques of model making, media integrating, photo collage and oral presentation skills has improved a lot.

Besides, for the second rotation, Architecture in Motion, the skills that I've developed in the first rotation is really useful as we have to make models and take lots of photos as well. However, apart from the improvement of model making and photo making skills, my drawing technique and critical thought has improved a lot. From this working shop, I've learnt how to present a project with different communication skills, like making a stop motion film.

For the third rotation, Fluid Thoughts to Actions, my drawing and communication skills has improved a lot. Besides of drawing accuratly, I've learnt how to draw with different kind of techniques like movement and motion. Besides, my group working skills and presenting skills has improved a lot as well.

In conclusion, from these three workshops, my communication, drawing, presenting, group working, model making, media integrating and lots of other skills has been improved. I found this course really helpful as the skills can be useful for my future carrier and assignments.

Fluid Thoughts to Action

Materials and tools used in the course:

The five drawings:

Collaborative interior drawings:

50 Drawings in Sketchbook:

Final Presentation:

Workshop reflection:

Fluid Thoughts to Action is my last rotation workshop of the course. I found this workshop really interesting as we are not only required to draw the spaces accurately with good observation, but also with some kind of movement and motions in it. We are require to use chalk for most of the drawings. Although I found it really difficult to control a chalk to draw a good drawing at first, my drawing techniques start to build up during the course. Besides of drawing skills, my observation skills has improved a lot as well. Moreover, I've found the warm up exercise is really good and effective as it boost our brain to run faster and the work we did afterward can be more efficient.

Besides of individual works, we are separated into different groups. The first group work is really challenging as we are only allow to give information to our group mates by phone and e-mail to draw a space. From this exercise, my communication skills improve a lot. In addition, another group work of the collaborative interior drawings, we have to combine our drawings into a huge drawing. It is quite fun and interesting as we work together to create a single drawing with different people's observation and thoughts.

Moreover, for the homework, 50 A4 drawings, my drawing and communication techniques really improved a lot, and it's quite nice to see the process of ourselves by drawing everyday.

As for the final submission, we are required to frame the pictures in order to give a good presentation. I've really learnt a lot of presentation skills for this submission, as we are not given lots of information and limit of materials for the presentation. We have to think critically in order to make a good quality presentation with beautiful frames. I believe this technique is quite useful for my future carrier as well.

Architecture in Motion

Film model

Final film

Workshop Reflection:

Architecture in Motion is my second rotation of the course. It is a really challenging workshop as we really have to use our imagination with some kind of drawing and modeling techniques in order to create the final product, film. Moreover, I found that the first rotation is quite useful as my skills in modeling can be used again in this course to make a good quality model. Besides, as we are required to build up drawings and a film from two of the five pictures and relate them together, we have to draw lots of drawings with a good plan. The most difficult part in this workshop is that we have to integrate a range of media into a single representation, integrating the model into the drawings with fluid sequences. Besides, we are required to represent our work every lessons, my oral communication skills has improved a lot. Also, my communication techniques combining 2D and 3D, overlaying them together to create a new complex visual documents has improved. Moreover, as we are required to use different media and techniques to make the film, I've learnt how to think more critically.

Material Modelling

Workshop Reflection:

From this workshop, I've learnt a lot of things and skills about material modeling and photographic documentation. We are required to describe a space in our home during the first class, then we have to build up the model of it. What's challenging is that we then have to use our imagination to create an extra space onto the model. It's hard for me to extend the small flat space that I've chosen. However, then I decided to cut the model into half and add an additional space onto the model, so that a sky garden can be added onto the original space.

Also, besides of radical transformations and imaginative and spatial complexity, I've done a lot of research about modeling and spaces arrangement in order to create a more successful space. I've found that Ricky Swallow and Mies work are relatively useful for my model that I've imply the stretagies they used into my model. For example, I've tried to separate the spaces carefully so that there can be a fluid flow of movement in the space. Additionally, my modeling skills have been improved a lot, and I've tried to use different types of materials to represent different kind of things like plants.

Finally, this is the first time for me to make photo collage. It is quite interesting for me to make a photo collage as we have to cut photo into pieces and combine them together with some pencil drawings, so that it becomes a complete image that describe the model I've made. Besides, the group oral presentation also gives me a great opportunity to practice my presenting skills.
